Giant cradle built for oil refinery
The refinery which is now owned by Essar Energy wanted to replace the top of a ‘cracker unit’ – where crude oil is made into petrol.
Essar required a cradle to support the unit and stand it on during dismantling work. Hutchinson Engineering, which has a permanent office at the site to assist with ongoing maintenance, was tasked with creating a cradle to support the unit.
Hutchinson’s design team created a cradle and the structure was fabricated using 400 tonnes of steel at Hutchinson’s two workshop sites.
The complex project took just four months to complete from start to finish and went ahead in September 2012.
Managing director Dean Drinkwater said: “This is one of the biggest projects we have undertaken for Essar and we are proud of what our skilled team has produced – this is British engineering at its best…well done to everyone involved.”
